Nursing. When you hear the word Nurse what do you think
about? ER, Greys Anatomy, schools? Well when I think about nurses I thin about
those few lucky ladies who have been so kind and have made an imprint in our
lives! My life and Deans life depend on nurses. Me for my sanity I wouldn’t be
able to get much done if it wasn’t for the nurses. Imagine you have 3 children,
I know some of us do well most of us these days do, but imagine adding medical
equipment and then those three lovely children to the grocery store or to the
hospital. Now imagine doing that by yourself…. Head exploded! Right? Mine
would’ve!
Finding the right nurse for your family is hard. Its like a
trial and error kind of thing. I believe in the whole almost 4 years experience
we have had about 13+ nurses. Some of whom didn’t make it past a shift, while
others stayed with us for years. My advice is follow your gut. You know what
your child needs and needs to be done. I have had issues with nurses not
knowing how to handle a trach, to those who didn’t know how to handle his vent.
Now his vent is a little easier to waive over a trach. My preferences have always
been that they know how to handle someone with a trach before they even step
foot into our house. Once you have found the right nurse (not perfect) treat
them like family. I mean after all they will be in your house for 12+ hrs a day
sometimes longer. They will literally become part of your family, they will
know your other children, your spouse, your friends and other family. Unless you
have different boundaries then it will be different of course.
Schedules, schedules, schedules. I live by schedules for dean,
he has one for his breathing treatments he has one for his medicines and even a
to go sheet for the hospital. Cause I mean who wants to go to the hospital all
the time and take time out from talking to drs to write down what medicines
they take and when they take it. I’ve included an example of what one would look
like. You don’t have to go by it just figured it would help! Anything that will
help your day and the nurses go by easier is what I always try to do.
